On March 28, 2025, at 1:20 PM (UTC+7), a strong earthquake of magnitude 7.7 struck about 19 kilometers northwest of Mandalay, Myanmar, at a depth of 10 kilometers. Twelve minutes later, a significant aftershock of 6.4 magnitude hit, worsening the situation.
The quake affected several areas, including Naypyitaw, Mandalay, Tanintharyi, Bago, and Kayah, causing tragic losses of life and widespread destruction of buildings and infrastructure, according to the Disaster Management Department (DDM). In response, the National Disaster Management Committee (NDMC) has declared a state of emergency in the hardest-hit regions: Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, northeastern Shan State, Naypyidaw, and Bago.

In Thailand, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) reported serious damage and risks to life across 57 provinces, with 56 aftershocks recorded. Initial assessments indicated significant impacts in 13 provinces and Bangkok, where emergency assistance areas have been declared in Pathum Thani, Phrae, and throughout Bangkok. The disaster response has been elevated to a Large-Scale Disaster (Level 3), activating the National Command Centre for Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.
As rescue and recovery efforts continue, the number of affected people may rise in the coming days. In response to the current situation, the ASEAN Institute for Disaster Health Management (AIDHM) is pleased to announce the launch of a dedicated feature on our website.
